Module 5: Lens-Based Media (Photography, Video & Sound)

Module 5:

Mr S. Vella - Audio and sound

Our 1st lesson was about Digital audio. Our lecturer discussed about sound wave, frequency and how we measure them in Hz.

Here is my Task 1 Part 2 (power point presentation):

We were given a task by Mr Vella to edit a short clip that gave us with recorded sounds, a V.O. and background music. I used pro tools, Adobe Audition and Premiere Pro.

Ms E. Abela Photography.

During Ms Abela's lectures we will be learning how used the camera when on Manual mode: ISO, Appature and shutter speed and obviously get a good amount of knowledge on the subject itself .... Photography. Here is basically what we have done so far:

On the 6th of October, Ms Abela gave us an exercise to do regarding ISO, Appature Shutter speed. We basically had to take 5 photographs of the same subject of our choice.  While we were taking this photos we had to experiment with the ISO, Appature and Shutter speed setting on our camera.  This way we as photography students learn how to take a good photo.  Here are my results:

ISO speed: ISO-6400 ,Exposure time: 1/50 sec, F-stop: f/8, MAX Aperture: 3.26,
Exposure bias: 0 steps and Focal length: 4mm

ISO speed: ISO-6400, Exposure time: 1/50 sec, F-stop: f/3.1, MAX Aperture: 3.26,
Exposure bias: 0 steps and Focal length: 4mm

ISO speed: ISO-6400, Exposure time: 1/50 sec, F-stop: f/3.1, MAX Aperture: 3.26,
Exposure bias: 0 steps and Focal length: 4mm

ISO speed: ISO-6400, Exposure time: 1/50 sec, F-stop: f/3.1, MAX Aperture: 3.26,
Exposure bias: 0 steps and Focal length: 4mm
ISO speed: ISO-1600, Exposure time: 1/60 sec, F-stop: f/3.1, MAX Aperture: 3.26
Exposure bias: 0 steps and Focal length: 4mm

ISO speed: ISO-6400, Exposure time: 1/40 sec, F-stop: f/3.1, MAX Aperture: 3.26,
Exposure bias: 0 steps and Focal length: 4mm

Considering the fact that the camera that I'm using now if a FUJIFILM FinePix S4300 camera, Ms Abela showed me how to arrange the settings and how to set the Aperture, ISO and Shutter speed.

During today's lesson Ms Abela explained to us about:

  • Light,
  • The Lumiere Brothers (Cinematography),
  • The first moving image camera,
  • Silent movies,
  • German expressionism,
  • Electromagnetic Spectrum,
  • Visible light,
  • The Physical properties of light,
  • Polarizers,
  • Direct flash bounce flash method,
  • How to use Flags,
  • Chromatic aberration and
  • Coloured and ND Filters

The Three Act Structure

During this lecture we learnt how a film is structured:
Beginning - Middle - End

We used the film The Lion King as an example:

The Beginning:

The famous sun rising scene, animals hearing the great news that their new king is born and an introduction to the characters (Mufasa, Sarabi, Simba, Zazu and Rafiki).

Middle: The highs and lows

Rivalry between brothers - Mufasa and Scar (Evil character),

Simba growing up and learning a lesson about the circle of life

Uncle and nephew moment - scar tells him about the elephant grave yard

Funny scene - making fun of Zazu and escaping from him

Simba and Nala go to the Elephant grave yard, meet up with 3 more villians - the hyenas: Ed, Shenzi and Banzai and chasing scene

Mufasa saves his son, Nala and Zazu

Mufasa has a talk with his son and forgives him (father son moment : ) )

Stampede scene: Scar leaves simba in the gorge, signal the hyenas to send the wild herds to kill simba, Scar goes to warn Mufasa and goes to rescue him

Mufasa's death by Scar

Mufasa saves Simba but dies because Scar let go of him and let him fall of the edge of the cliff, Scar tells Simba that he killed his own Father, to run away and never return, Scar sends the hyenas to kill him

Things get better again ....

Simba meets the animals (Pumba and Timon) who end up raising him and Singing "hakuna matata"

Reunion with an old friend - Nala:

Nala Returns and attacks Pumba and Timon

"Can you feel the love tonight" - Simba and Nala fall in love

Rafiki turns up out of nowhere and gives Simba advise to return home and be the king he was born to be.

Mufasa appears

Simba return to Pride Rock to confront Scar

End:

During the Christmas holidays I watched a film called Lion King 2.

So... main characters: Simba, Nala, Kitara,Timon and Pumba (good guys)
Kovu, Nuka, Vitani and Zira (Villans).

The story is basically based on the same 3 act structure of The Lion King.
